In a shiai, if you attempt a men after a kote, you have shown that you do not believe the kote was a success, therefore the kote will not be scored (even if it was good). However the men might be scored, if all the elements existed. If the men was no good but the kote was good - bad luck.

Zanshin is a state of mind, or for some of us, a display of how we would like our state of mind to be (!) it is not something to turn on and off.

But if you haven't shown it your cut is not a yuko datotosu.

All the elements of yuko datotosu are required in order to get the shinpans to put the flags up.

Practice often to improve your kote men technique, because then you can do it if and when it is appropriate.
