but in the end, Ghengis Khan took over regardless. except for japan where he got thrashed by water.
erm... Ghengis Khan only ruled about 97 years... and the exact perido for Yuan dynasty is 1279-1368. Then the Han Chinese kicked them out and formed Ming dynasty. If Lee Sai Man (Tang Dynasty emperor) was still around, he would kicked Ghengis Khan's ass so bad. Japan, I believe was never conquered by China but the language and many customs were adapted by Japan. Some of the royal court clothings in Ancient Japan looks similar to Ancient Chinese's royal court. And then, in some point in Japanese history they decided to cut the tie and have their own cultures, clothing, etc... In the end, China was took over by Manchurians, Han Chinese hated their guts but my favorite emperor has to be Qian Long during Qing Dynasty. And finally of course communists get it all in the end...

P.S. - I add this to avoid correction later. Yes, the Manchurians were a tribe had a close tie to Ghengis Khan, but they didn't like each other much. In a matter of fact, the Manchurians are the descendants of Jin dynasty, in which Ghengis Khan's tribe didn't like them much either.
