I've done some additional research and based on what I've been able to find out the "traditional" design was executed by Murasako-sensei (see instructors tab for a brief biography), one of the founders of what became the SCKF, when he lived in Southern California. A nice interview of Murasako-sensei is to be found in The Warriors Path: Wisdom from Contemporary Martial Arts Masters. I highly recommend the book.
