I think my main concern is learning and helping to preserve the art of Daito Ryu in the correct manner.
How many lesson did you have, a 1000? Please, don't say that unless you're an experienced aikijutsuka . I'm serious, just because you've had a few lessons doesn't mean you have to perserve the art of daito ryu. Leave that stuff to the high ranking members and the soke. Just enjoy daito and when you get the hang of it (this will take a few years) then you can say you want to preserve daito ryu.

You did karate for quite a while didn't you? Unless you really started to dislike karate, don't stop. You could always use it as a secondary art form. Keep it on once a week, or so, to keep your karate up-to-date. Who knows, you might be able to blend or incorporate a bit of your karate into aikijutsu. It would be a waste if your karate knowledge goes to waste.
