By preserve I meant to learn something which has been handed on from past generations.Maybe it isnt the right word considering I might not understand its true meaning. I just want to learn the right way should I have something of such meaning passed onto me. In which you suggest studying karate as a "side art" and maybe "mixing" the two. This doesnt sound very Daito Ryu to me. Although I swear I have seen a senior at the Aikijujutsu Dojo practicing empty hand kata.
AIkijutsu is (at least partially) empty handed, isn't it. There is nothing wrong with a "side art". Many others do it (I do ) the trick is not mixing it during practise (I did ). You are absolutely right about learning it the right way. But a lot of principles of one martial art are used in an other. This way they are beneficial to one an other. It could actually help you become a better "fighter". Your karate can become better by practising aikijutsu and visa versa. Remember the karateka I told you about? We had a similar discussion once. He told me that aikido made him "flow" more. Evading punches and things like that became easier for him and made his karate more effective because he could counter faster and better. He did not mix things up. He was still capable to separate the 2 arts without problems.
