That is a very good point you bring up. However I'm 30 years old, and my first one was at the age of 24 - but I had a lot of thought go into it though.

The tattooist that did my back was telling me a few stories about people walking in off the street wanting completely outrageous things done, and how he tells them "its going to be permanent, now do you want to go ahead?" followed by the customer thinking again and leaving.

I guess it's all part of life though, you make some good decisions and of course there will be a few bad decisions. But I figured that if I got something done, it is going to be meaningful to me and is a milestone in my life. I'm only going to live once, so why not.

One thing is for certain, I'm happy with what I have had done.

I don't think it's mutilation, just kind of dumb. The artwork you are so attached to right now won't seem such a good idea in 20 years, and you'll still be attached to it. Tastes change, we grow as people... I shudder to think what I might have written on myself 20 years ago if I had been inclined. But you're right, it's your choice. I just think we're going to have a lot of soccer moms in a few years really regretting that tribal tat in the lower back they got back when it was trendy.
