Mcdonalds went after White Castle on price point while In n Out competed on quality. White Castle does this thing with the onions that makes them taste different, unique. All the others were all going for uniformity and speed while In N Out is more of a custom burger building place.
I would not go to a McDonalds unless I was absolutely starving to death and had no chice. I haven't been to a White Castle in years, the only one around requires you to be armed with at least a 9 mm. Unfortunately In N Out are mostly Southern California but when I am there I will have a go. Their fries are cut right there from real potatos.
All around quality, In N Out hands down.

So why do we got stuck with Mc Donalds over here? We also have Burger King which is in my opinion better than Mc Donalds. But that's about it. We had an Arby's at some time which is technically speaking not a Burger joint but quite nice all the time. But alas they're gone.
So you guys have:
Mc Donalds
Burger King
White Castle
In 'n Out
Wendy's
Tommy's
Quite a lot to choose from, I have to go there like I said just to get a taste. And also to find out about them famous Grits.
