Missing Canadian boys safe as pedophile surrenders Wed Aug 2, 6:50 PM ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - The family of a 10-year-old Canadian boy alleged to have been abducted by a convicted pedophile said on Wednesday he will recover from the ordeal that ended with the suspected kidnapper's surrender.

"He is a very strong boy and he will get better," Zachary Miller's father Lyle told an emotional news conference in Broadview, Saskatchewan, a day after the boy escaped at an abandoned farm in the western Canadian province.

Suspected kidnapper Peter Whitmore, 35, was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, but police have not said what charges will be filed against him.

Whitmore gave himself up late on Tuesday after a nine-hour standoff at the farm near Kipling, Saskatchewan, where he was hiding from a large manhunt with Miller and a 14-year-old boy from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"My son has done everything I knew he would to get away," Lyle Miller said, wiping away tears.

The second boy, Jordan Bruyere, was also released safely.

Police launched a national manhunt after Miller was reported missing on Sunday and authorities realized Whitmore was a suspect in the case. Media reports indicate Bruyere may have been with Whitmore for several days longer.

Whitmore has served numerous prison sentences and been rearrested within weeks of his release on several occasions, either for new offenses or for violating terms of his release. The case prompted widespread concern that Canada's sentencing laws were not tough enough.

"There has to be a better way of ensuring that repeat sexual offenders who are plainly incurable and utterly incapable of controlling their violent impulses do not roam the country freely," the Globe and Mail newspaper said in an editorial.

"It should be possible to have sexual predators declared a threat to society without having to wait for them to commit more than one or two heinous crimes."

Whitmore's own lawyer has said Whitmore responds to tough controls, but the authorities erred in not renewing restrictions on his movements.
The last statement by his lawyer just left me lost for words...basically it says, oh, my client obeys the law when its enforced...its not his fault he did what he did...its the government's fault for not keeping tabs on him.

Pedo's should be shot.
