Sounds like Kokushikan. They still have a club and are slowely building their reputation up again. Uchimura Ryoichi attended it.

I was/am interested in going there and asked my sensei about it.

Essentially, there was a freshman who's father was a very famous sensei. So the sempai singled him out and were especially mean to him. One day, they ganged up on him, beat him, and stuffed him upside down into a folded mat where he suffocated.

He was a very nice kid and the father's oldest son.

That's the story.
There's more than one Kokushikan campus. The story I heard was that someone fell down during practice, was kicked and died as a result. Maybe it was a different incident?
