When I was a kid in Philadelphia there was a kid in the neighborhood whose name was "Danny the Queer". Danny was one of the toughest guys on the block, he had to be. Eventually everyone just accepted the fact that he liked to dress up in women's clothing and hang out at the Navy Yard and beat up sailors.
