The people paying the $8 really don't give a load about nuance. They want it in their face. It is called the "entertainment business" for a reason. I'm not saying that this is necessarily good, it is just the way it is.
I have run into several graduates of well known film schools and I wonder what it was they did there. The sheer volume of important films that they never saw is staggering. I guess they sat around talking about important stuff like "what they want to say" instead of stupid stuff like "what the audience wants to see".
I always thought that there was a guy that worked for the studio who's job it was to cut 5 minutes out of the finished film so that it doesn't make any sense at all. I have recently found out that such a person is called "producer".
Sydney Lumet said something like the only people who he couldn't work with were producers and teamsters, neither one of which were interested in making the movie that everyone else was making.
