It is my theory that most humans are motivated to act by only two things, fear and greed. The commercial fisherman will fish until there are no fish left because of the greed. When it gets down to the finish line and they realize that their ways spell doom for us all perhaps fear will kick in and they will do the right thing before it is too late.

Hutus vs. Tsutsi, Sunni vs. Shiite, Japanese vs. Barbarians, Chinese vs. Barbaians, Arabe vs. Jews, Black vs. White. . .fear and greed. Until we learn to move beyond that we are nothing but a bunch of monkeys.

However, if you hate your neighbor and he hates you and you try to kill each other, that is bad but, unless you have nukes, there is only so much damage you can do to the planet. If you disrupt the food chain in the ocean it is curtains for us all.

p.s. kenzan you might take some time to look into Thomas Malthus whose theory on population was pretty much what you set forth, that the population will outstrip the natural resources. His reasoning was flawed from the get go.
