Since the time Japan was first opened up to the West, with the exception of the early 1940's, there has been a sort of cyclical wave of popularity in Japan and Japanese culture. It comes and it goes.
My feeling is that it's on the decline, as you have mentioned. People become fascinated, then jaded, then bored. Give it a while, I am sure it'll be back.
(especially if Nintendo or Sony decide to come out with Robot Spouses some day.)
