Hey Leinheart,
For the most part, kendo isn't a self defense martial art. Doesn't mean it's worthless practicing, it's worthwhile for other reasons (check out the kendo no rinen, the purpose of kendo).
One of my sempai has practiced and taught karate for 30 years. He gave me the advice that no matter what martial art you know or how long you train, there are some crazy mother f@ckers out there who weigh 250, get angrier the more you hurt them, don't care about consequences, and
want
to hurt you. If you're out weighed, out muscled and out crazied, and don't want to kill or permanently disfigure someone, you're screwed in a fight no matter what ball kicking eye punching shinai wacking techniques you use.
Best way to go might be don't-pick-a-fight-with-huge-crazy-dude-waza.
But hey, sometimes things get out of hand. I'm not lecturing, just giving my opinion. Since you'll probably see this guy again, I'd go with JoDuncan's advice. Good luck to you.
