I have to admit, SNL isn't as funny 10 or 20 years later. I know, I'm wrong for saying that. I wish the Farley clips had included the "Van down by the river" sketch. Don't get me wrong, I know it is on the DVD, but I don't have the DVDs, so...yeh.
I agree with what you are saying, but we also have to take into account how jaded we are when it comes to comedy these days, and remember that the first years of SNL were so ground breaking because the type of comedy performed on that show had largely never been done before.
A lot of what we see in comedy today as cliche and old hat was brilliantly cutting edge and in many cases highly controversial and offensive to some people when it aired.

On the whole, I look at it as sort of the Blues to Rock and roll family tree thing.
