Why does flammable and inflammable mean the same thing?

It doesn't.

Flammable means something that will burn when it is set fire to.

Inflammable means something can set alight through intense heat.

See. I listened during my fire safety talk at work. Unless this is wrong in which case I forgot. But i don't think it is in which case I am right. So there.
