If they see you, you've failed - accident or not. It shows a serious lack of control of the sword. How can you show how badass you are when you cut yourself and not the other guy?

Brings to mind a comment I heard by Lenny Henry

" I bought myself a big new BMW and beat it up with lots of dents to show I don't mess about on the road"
