About Kiai...well one of your former countrymen had a really nice way to put it. There's a lot of hard stuff in kendo. Footwork, grip, suburi, fumikomi, seme..all of that stuff. But there's one easy thing you can do from the very start...and that is be loud. So start with the easy parts of kendo.
