from what i know mostly everyone knows what its celebrating where i come from.

It's an anti-Catholic "stick-it-in-your-face" celebration. Imagine the outcry if instead of the Pope being burnt as an effigy it was a Imam, a rabbi, the Archbishop of Canterbury or a black person? Would you be so relaxed about it?
