Husband has an air soft gun. He really likes playing with it.

The one he has, has a safety on it where it has to be pulled down to be able shoot. Good for non accidental firing. His is an automatic but they do have single shot ones. Start out with cans or water bottles first. His has a distance of 30 yards. Get some eye goggles if you do use it for 'war'. Oh heck, always use safety glasses.

You two will love them. Good to start out with while teaching the son.
