Default Reform bill protects Social Security for 75 years
Great news. It's fair, it's easily done, it makes a huge difference. Let's do it.

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Thursday that he wants to raise the cap on the payroll tax for people making more than $250,000, a move he said would have little financial impact on those earners but would ensure the viability of Social Security for the next 75 years.

“Ninety-four percent of Americans pay a Social Security tax on all of their income, but the wealthiest 6 percent do not,” Sanders said during a morning news conference at his offices in Burlington. “That is wrong, and that has got to change.”

Sanders, flanked by three community leaders representing groups who depend on Social Security benefits, also used the event to criticize Congressional leaders and President Barack Obama for agreeing to add Social Security to the agenda in crucial upcoming talks on a long-range deficit reduction plan.

“Social Security, because it is funded by the payroll tax not the U.S. Treasury, has not contributed one nickel to our deficit,” Sanders said. “Deficit reduction has nothing to do with Social Security.”
