Default Unthinkable: GOP has a shot at Weiner's old seat
Hey, nobody dreamed The Great Liberal Lion - Ted Kennedy - would have his seat go to a Republican. If the GOP wins Weiner's seat then you know the Dems are in for another shellacking in 2012.

Republicans See Opening in Race for Weiner's Seat

By Caitlin Huey-Burns - August 22, 2011

National Republicans are pouring a large amount of cash into next month's special election to replace former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, a sign that the GOP sees an opening in the traditionally blue district.

Weiner held the 9th Congressional District seat for 12 years until he resigned in June after admitting to sexual misconduct. His district includes Queen and parts of Brooklyn, areas that are typically safe for Democrats. However, a Siena College poll taken earlier this month showed the Democratic candidate, state Assemblyman David Weprin holding a narrow six percentage point lead over the Republican, retired cable TV executive Bob Turner.

That poll, combined with reports that area voters are souring on President Obama (his approval rating is upside down in the state, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll), has sparked interest in the race from outside the district. According to the New York Post, the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee is dispensing a five-figure sum into the race to support Turner.

“It’s clear the race is tightening and Weprin is sinking in the polls at the last minute,” the NRCC's Tory Mazzola told RCP. “It’s a path that could put it neck-and-neck by Election Day.”
