They grudgingly paid the ransom and the hostage was temporarily released. I don't think anyone disputes that.

Stocks have plunged upon the realization that there are people in Congress who would actually prefer to damage the country by forcing a default than allow a simple, uncontroversial process like increasing the debt ceiling to happen without grandstanding.
