Al Gore won't face prosecution in sexual assault allegation
PORTLAND —
Oregon
prosecutor says
Al Gore
won't be prosecuted over masseuse's allegations.
Police said they are not recommending prosecution in the case.
According to KPTV, the case was submitted to the police bureau July 27 for review of possible criminal charges against Gore, prosecutors said.
"Prosecution in this case is barred by a number of deficiencies that go far beyond the usual challenges presented in a delayed report sexual of assault prosecution," wrote Senior Deputy District Attorney Don Rees.
The accuser, Molly Hagerty, claimed the incident occurred Oct. 24, 2006, during a professional massage at a downtown hotel.
"Ms. Hagerty's detailed statement, however, is insufficient to support a criminal charge given other contradictory evidence, conflicting witness statements, credibility issues, lack of forensic evidence and denials by Mr. Gore," Rees said.
An attorney representing the woman contacted police in late 2006, said Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk. Schrunk said the woman refused to be interviewed by detectives and did not want the investigation to proceed.
The woman, however, contacted police in January 2009 and gave a statement, saying Gore tried to have sex with her during an appointment at the upscale downtown Hotel Lucia, where Gore was reportedly registered as "Mr. Stone."
