Ken,
I think you are correct in your assumption. Routine operations and treatment will be done in Spain but you will need to get the appropriate forms from Newcastle to transfer you to the Spanish system. Others on this forum who have already done it will no doubt be able to advise.
I believe that if you have 'residentia' then you should apply for your EHIC (has replaced E111) from the Spanish authorities and can then use it to get EMERGENCY treatment when you are back in Britain or in any other EU country.
Having said that, I doubt whether a British A & E department will bother to ask you for it.
