yeah i know its almost same price with the camera...thats why i got cheap vivitar flashes and moded them myself for vari power. if you are into moding flashes and immune to a small electric shock or 2 [thumbup] i would definitely recommend going that way. (some sony flashes are as low as $250 here but still thats almost half the price of the camera again).

almost all vivitar flashes are modable if you are into strobes. but be very careful not to go with a very very old flash. not all older flashes can be used with dslr's. their trigger voltage is very high and can fry your dslr easily

anything vivitar 728AFM and newer will work fine with sony/minolta dslr's. (tho thats not a TTL flash so u need to get the hang of it in time after moding it). older flashes can still be used off the camera, like with an optical or radio trigger.

one thing u can definitely do (also will give you a great deal of flexibility) is check ebay for radio triggers (they should be around $30-40). and buy an old and super cheap flash to go with it. so u can use the flash off the camera as a strobe or bounce flash or pretty much anything.
