There is an art to drinking (knowing what to drink and how much) that men like Kingsley Amis and Hitch mastered but most people never learn. I enjoy my share of tipple, but I have no doubt that heavy drinking is a cheap form of entertainment. I don't look down on it, mind you, but I'm aware that it's usually the last resort for evenings when you have no plans. Undoubtedly, someone who spends his free time going to museums, building model ships, or gardening (that's what you brits enjoy, right?) derives more satisfaction and fulfillment than those who prefer getting sloshed with mates at a venue that plays shitty music and serves overpriced drinks.

Incidentally, York seems like a rather nice place. I wouldn't mind visiting.
Alcohol, in large quantities, tends to accentuate people's personalities. If you're an ass, you'll be an even larger ass while drunk. Shy people tend to be more social because they really want to be when sober (but can't). Most disorderly drunks I've noticed are the cubicle working 9-5'ers. They are so pent up with their mundane routine that any chance they have to escape reality leads them into a beer-drinking extravaganza. I tend to only hang out with people who can handle their alcohol. Babysitting a drunken retard is the opposite of fun.
