it can be useful if you are self employed; every time i finish a project, if the client is on linkedin i'll request a testimonial. which sometimes does help to get projects.

the linkedin page like most other soc. networking profile pages can rank quite well in google, too.

expect random friend requests from people stating they know you, etc. annoying. i switch all the notifications off for every social networking site i use for that reason.
As someone who uses the endorsements quite often when recruiting a supplier or staff member I'd say that I tend to ignore ones from friends. In fact, too many from friends makes me suspicious. Sometimes it actually helps your career to turn down an endorsement. I look for recommendations from people who were directly managed by, or directly managed the prospective candidate.

The only point of this post is to give you some insight as to how a prospective employer might view your profile. It's worth checking that clients have added you as a supplier rather than a friend (a lot of people do that when they are in a hurry).
