I'm woefully out of the loop with tablets. My preconceived notion is that Apple's is the only solid tablet but it's so closed it's basically useless for anything except browsing.

I'd consider a tablet that lets me stick USB devices and network cables into it and have a slew of free, preferably open source software available. Windows would be a huge bonus. Did I just describe Microsoft's upcoming tablet?

The Nexus 7 is very high quality for the price. It's by far the best Android tablet, with its only true disappointment being 7" screen (which could be considered a plus due to form factor). Google has a proven track record with their Nexus devices, and my guess would be a broader range of devices in the near future.
