Here's the thing... it hijacked users' DNS settings to the DNS servers of the malware writers choice. The fact of the matter is the FBI has had control over said servers for ~year now, and have been re-directing a number of popular addresses to a page that notifies the end users that they're on an infected system. Aside from the massive media over-hype, due to not having anything else to spin recently, this was barely a blip on the radar... I like to think of it like the Internet's natural selection: If you still got "knocked off the internet" it's because you're either too stupid or too insignificant to matter.
