I'm sure you know better than me, but I thought (and remember being told whilst in Den Haag at great length) that Holland is just one region of The Netherlands,
The Netherlands is divided into 12 "provinces". Two of them are "Noord-Holland" and "Zuid-Holland" translation = North & South Holland (even though they are in the west).
Holland is just another name for The Netherlands.
and people not in that region don't like the name being synonymous with the whole country.
I've never heard about this. When dutch people refer to holland they are never referring to the provinces North & South Holland.
