Actually there is a lot they can do, especially now that we have no aircraft carrier. The islands are prime for invasion, it is impossible to defend them without a carrier.

But their aircraft are pretty much at the same level as the 1980s, at least we have more modern stuff and anti-air on the Island. Plus if the worse happened, I guess we would have to run missions from a French carrier (like we did in Libya).
