Buying a customer base and a tool to lure in more customers. It was a smart business move.

I think it was a smarter move on Instagram's part to be put on sale.

To Facebook, it's an extra feature with an already big customer base but Instagram on it's own was just an app with no way of making money; now it's just a crowd drawing feature of a the bigger Facebook universe.

Besides, there are a lot of other Instagram competitors.
