I am thinking of science fiction (probably Star Trek) where they are offered immortality or something and the main character makes a speech about not wanting to live beyond his natural span, and the human race not being ready, etc.......

And I always think "Well, cool!" because after the people with objections live out their natural spans and die, all that will be left is the (perhaps more selfish people) who thought it was a great idea.

I think the same way about people in religious-type sects that rule out medical intervention.

Not saying its a good thing, just that in human history, few are those who really really turn away from a longer life, even those who claim they would. Always in the end, some rationalization is found to accept whatever new discovery's brought about the extension.
