It's both.

I prefer to read a book, on paper, by the soft light of an incandescent lightbulb. Call me a caveman...
I used to say the same thing till I actually saw an ebook IRL. Not to belabor the issue, but an e book doesn't have a backlit screen like a laptop. The screen is a unique material that looks just like ink on paper-you can see it just fine outdoors, too... and you need a light to read it in low light just the same as a paper book.
