Sadly, the seem intent on merely replacing the Soviets with a new menace of some sort.. I think the problem with this idea isn't that it's not beneficial, it's that it isn't particularly profitable.

The cold war was worth a lot of money.. Networks of cronies coalesced around that spending. Now, they're very powerful.

You can see the way the GOP reacts to any threat of a defense cut.

I think they just want a new enemy and intend to kick the cold war can down the road.. Now it's the GWOT... But it could be anything, really.
