After reading the original post I scanned the replies to see who would say it first.

Constitution of the united States
Amendment 13

Section 1.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

I would assume the clause; except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, modifies involuntary servitude only and not both slavery and involuntary servitude.
That poorly written section could get us in trouble some day.
