That depends on the load.. And the stock is about the only place left to hide such a device..

Weapons get disassembled and cleaned all the time. It would have to be concealed just about perfectly.

And, absent such a device.. How would you expect to "track" them?

Israel had a device they embedded in a table.. the flat part in the top..the only way to find it would be to cut it in half at the exact spot..it had a transmitter, receiver and recorder..they developed it with the CIA and it had a 4 year battery..
