I bought the
Litter Kwitter
and it took some real dedication, but was definitely working. But then we had a setback (the bathroom we were using was "invaded" by an outsider and our cat subsequently rejected it). I always planned to start over again from our master bathroom, where we have more control of who goes in/out, but then we got another cat, and then I never got around to it... I can say it was going well enough that, if my situation changed (I had the time/space to devote to it again), I'd definitely go for it.
If you go on YouTube you will find a gazillion videos of success stories, and there's even a Yahoo Group I joined for a while to share trials and tribulations.
ETA: I'm sure it takes a very special cat for this, but my favorite success story was one where the cat "got" what a toilet of any sort was for and the owners were able to travel and even stay in hotel rooms and their kitty would always do her thing in the right place no matter where they went.
PS If you're concerned about conserving water, best not to teach 'em how to flush though...
