Back in the mid-'50s, my dad was looking for work in the art departments of various NYC ad agencies, but he was up for the draft, which pretty much got everyone male after college in those days, so no place wanted to hire him, knowing they'd lose him in a few months. One place hired him, but there was a catch. He would be replacing a guy who belonged to a religious group that believed that the world would end the following month. Their spiritual leaders had made this same prediction every few years, with a different date each time, and the guy would quit his job, sell everything, and gather with the elect to wait for it. When it didn't happen, he would come back, looking to get his job back.

"We like his work, he's a nice guy, and we'll hire him back, so the job is temporary," the interviewer told my dad.

"But what if he's right?" my dad asked.

The interviewer didn't bat an eye. "In that case, I guess the job's permanent."
