What constitutes the "eye for an eye" doctrine?

It's not a proper doctrine in the Catholic sense (which is to say it doesn't stand up to theological scrutiny). Rather, it's the answer you get when you ask a fundamentalist or "born again" Christian why they support the death penalty. "An eye for an eye, that's what it says in the Bible."
