Actually this IRS tactic is way older than you are. It was a popular way in the 70s to go after left-leaning community non-profits basically masquerading as GOTV drives... for only one candidate.

And the telethon churches of the 1980s. I'm aware of the churches, I was just kidding :P.

Now when pols show up at churches the preacher, aldermen and the pol himself have to step on tiptoes if they want to keep their tax exemption. Most of the time when the tax exemption gets stripped and the public embarrassment pops up over the church, it meets its fiscal demise rather quick. I heartily endorse any of these faith healing Christian "Science" churches going down the tubes.
