I find the concept of "giving something up" to be a little misdirected. Instead, I try to use the time to do something extra--additional good deeds I wouldn't normally do, like helping old ladies cross the street, rescuing cats from trees, etc. Of course, I haven't found any old ladies or cats yet, but that doesn't stop me from trying.
As for the meat issue, I really don't follow that rule. I find it completely ridiculous that someone could go out and have a fancy lobster dinner, yet I'm not allowed to have a piece of bacon on my sandwich. I figure if my diet is what gets me condemned to hell, I'm not doing too badly.
