Salam, Could someone explain the hadith : "Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error." (Abu Dawud) It seems confusing because novelty and bidah as I understand essentially means "new". If I were to apply that meaning to the narration then it would mean: ".........for every *new matter* is an *new matter*, and every *new matter* is an error." Which does not make it a proper meaningful sentence.
