After much reflection and dua', I've decided to pursue a PhD in Islamic Studies, with the aim of representing Classical Islam in western Academia, inshallah. However, It is crucial that I first strengthen my Arabic abroad, and also study at least the basics of Islam with traditional scholars.

May Allah give you tawfiq. My only advice is that if you have time, spend a few years seriously studying with `ulama before pursuing a PhD at a Western University. More than one person has gone in with the aim of defending Islam and come out as an apostate, والعياذ بالله.
