A bit shocked I have to say... do we know if Imam Abu Dawud applied ta'wil to such hadiths?

Don't be shocked! Those types of 'ahaadiyth contain great amounts of knowledge. They are like mathematical equations containing and explaining enormous facts in succinct words. You must have knowledge on a high level to understand them otherwise you would have no idea about their meaning.
