Salam Alaykum,

I know that what Shaykh Buti and Mufti Gomaa said seem to be quite strange, but it is not up to us to anathematize them. I am sure if someone were to tread through the sayings of any given ordinary Muslim, they would find enough 'dirt' to perhaps have him Islamically executed. This is why the 'Ulama in most cases will say that 'such and such belief is disbelief' rather than specifying on 'such and such person is a disbeliever'.

Specifically about this thread it is best if the Muftis and Shaykhs on board if this discussion serves any purpose.
As salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah,

The reason why such a stance or statement is seen to be of great significance or great consequence is due to the individuals status or standing. In Surah az-Zumar, Allah ('azaa wa jal) says, ' Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.'
