I fear you're correct. Especially as your description was similar to my trip to City Market this morning. Surprisingly not many Indians (dots, not feathers) today.

All week I've been baffled by the pissy attitudes of the ones who actually do have jobs (at the grocery stores). I was a tad obnoxious over an incident yesterday morning, and today I put my stuff back and left one store, only to run into more attitude at the next store. It's like they're resentful over 'having' to work.

I'm glad I like my job. It fuckin' rocks!
I'm guessing you're describing metro markets. That's one distinct advantage to living in a rural area. Very few of the employees will cop a attitude in rural grocery stores. (usually applies to other rural stores as well)

They know if they do they'll be out the door after only one, or two incidents of "showing their ass" since customers aren't as prolific as they are in metro areas.
