I'd rather see Obama himself be replaced.

That won't happen.. But it is possible.

It would wrong foot everyone and turn the race upside down..

Say Obama steps down and they bring Hillary out of the convention? That would take everyone by surprise.

But to do that would be implicitly admitting that their policies and their president are unpopular and have failed.
