So what do you attribute this to? Poor educational system, generational ignorance, the media?

Honestly we need to address the glut of people with poor critical thinking skills if we're going to move forward in this nation.

I have to be honest and admit that I really can't comment on "why" people are so damned stupid. But yes, the lack of critical thinking that infects large swaths of society today is quite disturbing.
